Asphalt Driveway Crack Filling Services
Coastal Paving and Excavating provide driveway crack filling services throughout Monterey County. If you have a cracked driveway, acting fast is key in order to prevent potholes or further damage that can be caused through water infiltration.
Cracks are inevitable, and in almost every type of asphalt driveway, they will form over time. Factors such as the surrounding water flow, the structural integrity of the asphalt layer, and any winter freeze/thaw cycles will all impact the rate at which drive cracks will appear. Although it’s not possible to prevent them completely, regular maintenance such as asphalt seal coating can help you get the longest life from your driveway.
Whether it’s a commercial parking lot, a residential driveway, or any other type of asphalt cracking, we can help you put things right quickly.
Coastal Paving & Excavating is a leader and trusted provider for underground utilities, roads, driveways and parking lots in the Monterey Peninsula.

Why Driveway Crack Filling is Important
Crack filling is necessary for a number of reasons.
- It can prevent any incompressible materials from penetrating the crack resulting in the expansion and contraction of the pavement – causing even more deterioration.
- It can prevent the intrusion of water into the under layers of the structure, which can further weaken the driveway.
If you’ve noticed cracks on your driveway, it’s important to get them filled as soon as you can. Any crack can result in moisture penetration into the sub-base. If the cracks have been on the driveway for some time, or there is extensive cracking, then you may need to consider patching instead of filling.
At Coastal Paving and Excavation, we can quickly help you determine which service is going to give you the best results.

The Benefits of Driveway Crack Filling Services
If you leave a crack in your driveway to fester, it will let in excess moisture from snow, ice, rain, and other chemicals that can eventually erode the base of the asphalt. It will lead to the cracks widening, and eventually, these cracks will develop into potholes.
Whether you are in a commercial or residential property, potholes and cracked driveways are a liability you need to take care of.
- It’s an affordable maintenance practice
- It will help increase the lifetime of your driveway
- It stops smaller cracks from developing into bigger cracks
- It will improve the overall appearance of your driveway
What is the Difference Between Crack Sealing and Driveway Crack Filling?
It’s not uncommon for the terms ‘crack filling’ and ‘crack sealing’ to be used interchangeably. But there are differences between these two different crack repair methods.
Crack Sealing involves a hot sealant being used with working cracks in order to prevent the intrusion of water. A working crack is either a vertical or horizontal movement in cracks that are greater than 0.1”.
Crack filling involves the placement of asphalt emulsion into non-working cracks in order to lessen the chances of water or other substances infiltrating the pavement. It can also serve to reinforce any adjacent paving.
If you’re trying to establish which is the right method of crack repair for your driveway, give our friendly team a call, and we’ll make an appointment to visit you and assess your options.
Not All Driveway Cracks Are Created Equal:
There are many different types of cracks that can appear, and not all of these are equal in their appearance or severity. Our team is trained to use the most effective methods and products to treat each different type of driveway crack that can surface.
A hairline crack is usually under ¼” wide. Typically, these types of cracks cannot be filled due to the lack of space within the crack. Sealcoating could be a better option at this point. However, it will not hide the crack; but instead, it will provide an extra layer of protection.
A structural crack is usually great than ¼” wide. Aside from crack filling, it’s also advisable to get professional seal coating as well. A large structural crack could be filled up until the point it is around 1” wide.
These types of driveway cracks are cosmetic and superficial.
These types of cracks extend perpendicularly to the laydown or centerline of the paving.
These are typically clusters of cracks together in a specific area. It gets the name ‘alligator’ because the cracks look a little like alligator skin.
If you see something like this on your driveway, then it could mean that a section of the asphalt has failed. In this situation, crack filling will not effectively work to resolve the issue.
Seal coating is another option, but this will only provide a temporary fix. The only long-term solution will come from replacing the area with new asphalt.
